Philippines Reaches Upper-Middle-Income Status With $4,850 Per Capita GNI

According to Rappler citing a World Bank report, the Philippines officially reached upper-middle-income status on July 6, with gross national income per capita hitting $4,850, above the $4,636 threshold. The upgrade marks the country's transition after nearly four decades as a lower-middle-income economy. The Philippines' poverty rate declined to 15.5% in 2023 from 23.5% in 2015, while income inequality fell to its lowest in four decades, with the Gini coefficient dropping below 40 for the first time.
