Vitalik reveals Ethereum's growth strategy in two phases
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently outlined a strategic vision for network scaling, emphasizing a gradual approach that combines short-term and long-term goals. This roadmap relies on targeted technological improvements to address congestion and transaction cost issues that hinder mass adoption.
Short Term: Glamsterdam and Gas Optimization
According to Vitalik, the upcoming Glamsterdam update will mark a turning point for the network’s short-term performance. This upgrade will introduce several optimization mechanisms: implementing access lists at the block level for faster validation, and the ePBS mechanism to extend validation times for block producers.
A major innovation involves the introduction of multidimensional gas, which differentiates resource consumption and directly alleviates state congestion problems. Separating state creation costs means that gas used for this operation will no longer count toward the standard limit, enabling more ambitious contract deployments.
To maintain compatibility, Vitalik highlighted that a “reservoir” mechanism will ensure continuity of sub-calls and gas-related operations. This measured approach guarantees a smooth transition to the new pricing model without disrupting existing developers.
Long Term: ZK-EVM and Blobs for Sustainable Scalability
In the long run, Vitalik envisions an evolution toward more advanced technologies: Zero-Knowledge proofs with the EVM and the gradual expansion of blobs. Thanks to iterative improvements like PeerDAS, blobs are expected to achieve data availability of 8 MB/s, revolutionizing block data verification.
This architecture would allow direct data verification without full downloads, drastically reducing infrastructure requirements for nodes. The gradual shift to multidimensional gas pricing will ensure economic sustainability while maintaining system flexibility.
Vitalik’s Unified Vision for Sustainability
The strategy presented by Vitalik combines technological innovation with operational pragmatism. By merging the immediate gains of Glamsterdam with the transformative power of blobs and ZK-EVM, Ethereum solidifies its leadership in scalability. This two-phase approach reflects a deep understanding of technical and economic challenges, positioning the network for sustainable and inclusive growth.
