Reports say Tesla's Matrix Headlights will receive a software upgrade: two-stage gradient dimming, eliminating glare from reflections
Tesla Plans to Upgrade Matrix Headlights for Enhanced Safety and Visibility
According to Teslarati, Tesla is planning to upgrade its Matrix Headlights, a unique high-tech feature available on several models. The headlights are designed to maximize driver visibility while ensuring safety for oncoming vehicles.
IT Home has learned that Tesla’s matrix headlights can independently adjust the brightness of individual LEDs, maintaining clear visibility for the driver while reducing glare for oncoming vehicles to prevent distraction. The actual effect is as follows:
As shown, the system will proactively dim areas where high beams might shine on oncoming vehicles, helping all road users maintain optimal visibility and avoid being blinded by bright lights.
However, some owners have raised concerns about this feature, and Tesla appears to be addressing these issues in a software update codenamed 2026.2.xxx. X user BERKANT has discovered related code.
According to the update, Tesla will optimize headlight performance when encountering highly reflective objects such as road signs, traffic signals, and streetlights. Additionally, pixel-level dimming will be upgraded from the current single-level on/off mode to a two-level gradual transition.
Finally, the new system will also prevent high beams from reflecting glare into the driver’s eyes. Currently, the system only dims when detecting oncoming vehicles but cannot handle objects that cause reflective glare.
This upgrade is entirely software-based, and existing Tesla vehicles equipped with matrix headlights can be upgraded without any hardware modifications or replacements.
