China Appoints Envoy to Facilitate Middle East Diplomacy

(MENAFN) China will send a special envoy to the Middle East to communicate with regional governments and support mediation efforts aimed at easing tensions, the country’s foreign minister said Wednesday, according to reports.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the announcement during a phone conversation with Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, as part of ongoing diplomatic contacts with countries in the region.

In another call with United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Wang emphasized that humanitarian principles must be respected even during armed conflicts.

He stated that even in times of war “the red line on protecting civilians must not be crossed,” while also expressing China’s support for resolving disputes through diplomatic means rather than military action.

Regional tensions have risen sharply after the United States and Israel launched airstrikes against Iran beginning Feb. 28. According to Iranian officials cited in reports, the attacks have resulted in more than 850 deaths, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and over 150 elementary schoolgirls.

Iran has since responded with drone and missile strikes targeting locations linked to the United States in Gulf countries, causing several casualties. Reports say six American service members were killed and others were injured in those retaliatory attacks.

Earlier in the week, Wang also held discussions with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, during which he stated that military action against Iran would not provide a solution to the crisis.

He also spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, urging Tehran to address what he described as the “reasonable concerns” of neighboring states during their phone conversation.

China has repeatedly voiced opposition to the US and Israeli military operations targeting Iran.

During a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Monday, Beijing condemned attacks that affect children in conflict areas following reports that an Israeli strike killed dozens of schoolgirls in Iran.
