After U.S. President Trump officially nominated Kevin Warsh to succeed Powell as Federal Reserve Chair, Warsh met with Republican Senator Thom Tillis to discuss the nomination. Tillis described the meeting as “a good meeting,” but reiterated that he would block any Federal Reserve personnel appointments through the Senate Banking Committee until the Department of Justice concludes its investigation into Powell.

Thom Tillis said, “I think he’s got the right mindset to face this,” and hopes to dispel his opposition to what he considers a false investigation, so that he can take office in time and meet the May deadline.

“I am very impressed with his abilities. I have known his work for a long time, and that’s why I am very frustrated that I can’t vote until we resolve another issue.”

Tillis stated that Warsh did not comment on the ongoing investigation during the meeting, and he did not ask for any commitments from him.

Tillis’s support on the Senate Banking Committee is crucial; without his backing, Warsh may not secure enough votes to advance his nomination. Chairman Powell’s term will end in May, and it remains unclear whether Warsh will be confirmed at that time.
