Just realized a lot of people still don't know how to properly update their SASSA details, especially when it comes to banking information. Been helping family members sort this out and it's actually more complicated than it seems depending on which grant you're on.

If you're on permanent grants like the old age or disability one, you literally have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office—no shortcuts online. They'll give you a form to fill out and you need to bring your ID and proof of your new bank account (a bank statement less than 3 months old works). The key thing nobody mentions is that the account has to be solely in your name, no joint accounts or anything. After you submit, they send it to the bank for verification which takes up to 21 days, so if you're doing a banking update, do it before the 15th of the month or you'll miss that month's payment.

Now if you're on the SRD R370 grant, that's way easier. Everything is online through their portal—you enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, and you just update your bank details through that. Takes a few days to a few weeks for verification but at least you don't have to leave home.

For changing your phone number, same deal—permanent grants need an office visit, but SRD has an online portal where you enter your ID and Application ID, then verify the new number with an OTP they send you. There's also the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 if you get stuck, though honestly the online route is faster.

One thing to watch out for: there are fake websites pretending to be SASSA. Always make sure you're on the official portal before entering any personal info. Has anyone dealt with delays on their banking update before? Curious if the 21-day timeline is actually accurate or if it's usually faster.
