Just realized a lot of people struggle with updating their SASSA details, especially the banking info for R350 grants. Let me break down what actually works based on what I've seen.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you can't just change your bank account online—annoying but that's how it works. You need to physically go to your nearest SASSA office and fill out the Payment Method Change Form. Bring your ID (original + copy) and proof of your new bank account. That stamped bank statement needs to be less than 3 months old, or get a letter from your bank. Important: the account has to be solely in your name, no joint accounts or anything. They'll send it to the bank for verification, which takes up to 21 working days. If you want it to kick in next month, submit before the 15th.
For the SRD R370 grant though, it's way simpler because it's all online. Go to the SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they'll SMS you a secure link. Click it, add your new bank details, and you're done. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for verification. Same rule applies—account must be in your name only.
Changing your phone number? For permanent grants, just call 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office. For SRD, use their contact portal—enter your ID and Application ID, add the new number, they send you an OTP to verify. Way smoother than the old system.
One heads up: there are fake SASSA websites out there trying to scam people, especially with phone number changes. Always use the official portal links. If the online process gets messy, just call SASSA or go in person. Yeah, it might mean waiting around, but it's safer than dealing with unofficial sites.
