just figured out how to properly change banking details for my SASSA grant and honestly it's way different depending on which grant you're on. if you're getting the SRD R370, it's actually pretty straightforward—everything's online through their portal. you just enter your ID number, they send you a link via SMS, and you can update your banking details right there. takes a few days for the bank to verify it but that's it.

the permanent grants though? that's a whole different story. old age, disability, child support—if you're on any of those, you can't just do it online. you literally have to go to a SASSA office in person and fill out their "Payment Method Change Form." you'll need your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months), and they'll take your biometrics. the thing is, the account has to be solely in your name—no joint accounts or third-party stuff.

once you submit it, they send everything to the bank for verification which can take up to 21 working days. heads up though: if you want the change to apply next month, you need to get it done before the 15th. miss that deadline and you're waiting another month.

for your phone number, SRD has a separate contact portal where you enter your ID and Application ID, then they text you an OTP to confirm. for permanent grants, you'd call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or just visit your local office. fair warning: there are fake websites out there pretending to help you change these details, so stick to the official SASSA portal if you're doing this online. safety first.
