What are the lessons from the success factors of the AI Memphis Myth for Chinese airports?

21st Century Business Herald Zhang Xu Beijing Report

Little-known FedEx built a super transfer center at Memphis Airport in the United States, and since then not only has it grown into the world’s leading express logistics integrator, but also propelled Memphis Airport to become one of the world’s largest cargo hubs, creating the industry-renowned “Memphis Myth.”

In China, who can replicate the “Memphis Myth”? As the world’s fourth and Asia’s first specialized cargo airport, Ezhou Huahu Airport in Hubei is highly anticipated. Additionally, on December 26, 2025, Jiaxing Nanhu Airport officially opened, marking China’s civil aviation industry’s second specialized cargo hub after Ezhou Huahu Airport.

Ezhou Huahu Airport plans to handle 3.3 million tons of cargo and mail by 2030, and 9.08 million tons by 2050. Meanwhile, Jiaxing Nanhu Airport’s 2030 plan aims for a cargo and mail throughput of 1.1 million tons per year, with a long-term goal of 2.46 million tons. The cargo and mail throughput of these two airports is expected to continue growing rapidly in the future.
