When I look at Bhutan's crypto strategy, they are really making an interesting move. They are not just offering a simple residence system for the digital nomad visa but are trying to be one of the few countries to directly integrate blockchain into government processes.
At the core of the program is a gold-backed token called TER. This token, operating on the Solana network, is backed by pure gold stored in secure vaults. Each TER represents 0.01 grams of gold. The program, launched in 2025, currently has over 7.8 million tokens. It can be converted into physical gold through DK Bank, which is an interesting approach.
The visa structure is quite simple: a $2,800 annual fee and an investment in TER tokens worth $10,000. The visa is valid for 12 months and can be extended for 24-36 months. There is no fixed income requirement, but they target those working in technology, sustainability, and entrepreneurship.
Bhutan's move is truly noteworthy because they have implemented some of the strictest tourism policies in the world for decades. Visitors were required to pay daily fees of $100-250 and join guided tours. The new digital nomad visa is a radical departure from this approach. Visa holders can now travel freely across the country without mandatory stay requirements.
Other countries also offer digital nomad visas, but Bhutan's model is different. Countries like Estonia, Portugal, and the UAE offer similar programs but do not require blockchain-based tokenized asset investments. El Salvador offers residence pathways linked to Bitcoin, but Bhutan's gold-backed stablecoin approach is more structured.
Bhutan's crypto strategy is part of a broader vision. The country uses excess hydroelectric power to mine Bitcoin and holds hundreds of millions of dollars in BTC reserves. Officials have committed 10,000 BTC to support GMC's long-term plans. Additionally, parts of the national digital identity system are built on Ethereum. Seeing these moves as a whole, Bhutan is truly trying to integrate crypto technology at the state level.
The partnership between Gelephu Conscious City Authority and NomadClub launched this program. In fact, this creates a unique example among digital nomad visa countries—it's hard to find another model that deeply integrates crypto and blockchain into government functions. Bhutan's model goes beyond crypto trading or DeFi; it has become a functional requirement within a real state system.
