Surge in Cryptocurrency Kidnappings in France: 135 Cases in Two and a Half Years, Involving Minors, 75 Detained
On April 25, the French Organized Crime Prosecutor’s Office (PNACO) announced that since 2023, there have been a total of 135 recorded cases of kidnappings or attempted kidnappings related to cryptocurrency in France. Data shows that among the 12 cases currently being followed by PNACO, 88 individuals have been formally investigated, including over 10 minors, with approximately 75 people detained awaiting trial. The prosecution stated that the increase in these cases is due to the judicial authorities’ integration of several scattered cases to address the rapidly evolving forms of crime associated with crypto assets. Data indicates that there were 18 related cases in 2024, which rose to 67 in 2025, and has reached 47 so far in 2026. PNACO pointed out that this trend in crime is closely related to the increased use of crypto assets and has become one of the important new forms of organized crime.
