The United States government (US) has frozen USDT worth US$344 million or IDR 5.9 trillion, where the crypto assets are suspected to be linked to Iran, on Friday (24/04). In addition, Tether has coordinated with the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and U.S. law enforcement.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the federal government has imposed sanctions on several digital wallets related to Iran. This step was taken by U.S. President Donald Trump to put additional economic pressure on Iran amid a ceasefire that is still ongoing.
“We will track the money that Tehran is desperately trying to move abroad and target all financial channels associated with the regime,” Bessent said, citing CNN, Saturday (25/04).
For your information, the Iranian government has indeed accepted Bitcoin as a form of payment for transit fees imposed on oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
