Remember: cycles are inevitable, and humans cannot avoid them. Every once in a while, there is a long period of rising, reaching an extreme high point (or a long period of falling, reaching an extreme low point). People start to say 'this time is different,' referring to the changes that render the 'old rules' outdated, including geopolitical changes, institutional changes, technological changes, and changes in human behavior. However, the ultimate result is often that the old rules still hold true and the cycle starts again. In the end, trees don't grow to the sky, and very few things completely disappear.
