The United States Bans the Import and Export of AI Technology, Including DeepSeek

On January 29th, Republican Senator Josh Hawley - a China hawk - introduced the American AI Initiative Act, which would have a direct impact on the AI software company DeepSeek if passed, although it is not specifically mentioned.

Quoting the issue of intellectual property rights, the bill will prohibit all US citizens and businesses from conducting research and development (R&D) with any individual or entity based in China.

Violators can be fined up to $1 million for individuals and $100 million for businesses. They will also be required to revoke any licenses, contracts, subcontracts, grants, or public benefits from any federal institution.

The bill will also prohibit the import and export of AI technology between the US and China, which means DeepSeek will be banned from operating in the US.

The proposal comes amid escalating US-China tensions after former President Donald Trump imposed an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods. Critics say Senator Hawley's move could hamper growth and competition in the field of AI - but it could also be a symbolic move.
