Korea Ex-police Exec Gets 6 Years Over $90K Bribes - Crypto Economy
A former senior police officer in South Korea was sentenced to six years in prison and fined 100 million won after a court found he took about 120 million won ($90K) in bribes from people under investigation, The Chosun Ilbo reported.
The Uijeongbu District Court’s Goyang Branch said the defendant, a former Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency supervisor in his 40s, accepted 50 million won in cash plus 70 million won in entertainment expenses between Dec. 2023 and Mar. 2024. Prosecutors said he met suspects in a “coin consignment sales” fraud case via a law-firm office manager and implied he could “smooth over” the investigation while he worked on multiple economic-crime probes, including crypto investment “reading-room” scams.
The court also found he falsely claimed overtime about 80 times from July 2023 to June 2024, collecting 7.88 million won, while the intermediary received a suspended sentence and a fine. Next, stakeholders will watch for any appeal steps and whether authorities tighten controls around case handling and outside-contact governance.
