Optimism’s Major Proposal: 50% of Superchain Revenue to Be Used for OP Token Buybacks—What Could This Mean for the Market?

On January 8, 2026, the governance community of Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution Optimism received a pivotal proposal: The Optimism Foundation officially recommended allocating 50% of total Superchain network revenue to regularly repurchase OP tokens on the open market.

The proposal is scheduled to enter the voting phase on January 22. If approved, the buyback program will officially launch in February.

01 Strategic Shift

This proposal marks a significant evolution in Optimism’s growth strategy. Historically, Optimism relied heavily on OP token grants from its treasury, incentivizing developers and ecosystem projects through initiatives like Retro Funding—a "subsidy-driven" growth model.

The new proposal signals that the ecosystem is generating substantial revenue and is willing to channel a portion of that income back into the token itself.

According to data disclosed by the Optimism Foundation, over the past 12 months, Optimism has earned 5,868 ETH in revenue from Superchain, all managed by the treasury under governance oversight.

Based on last year’s revenue, the new mechanism would allocate approximately 2,000 ETH annually (about $800,000 at current prices) for OP buybacks.

02 Mechanism Design

Buyback funds will come from Superchain revenue. Superchain is a Layer 2 network cluster built on the OP Stack, including well-known chains such as Base, Unichain, Ink, World Chain, Soneium, and OP Mainnet.

Each of these chains contributes a portion of their sequencer revenue to the Optimism collective treasury. Under the proposal, 50% of these funds would be dedicated to OP token buybacks.

The Optimism Foundation plans to collaborate with third-party OTC providers, converting ETH to OP each month during a predetermined window, regardless of the conversion price. The OTC approach is chosen because current DEX and CEX platforms may not offer sufficient liquidity for these transactions.

Repurchased OP tokens will return to the token treasury. In the future, these tokens may be burned, distributed as staking rewards, or used to fund ecosystem expansion.

03 Market Signals

Market reactions to the proposal have been mixed. Some investors view it as a positive step toward stabilizing OP and enhancing its long-term value.

They believe this will create structural demand, tying token economics to Superchain activity, and strengthening long-term sustainability and governance efficiency.

On the other hand, critics have raised concerns. David, Head of Consulting at Blockworks, noted on social media that in a highly competitive and dynamic industry, maintaining regional dominance alone is not enough to ensure continued leadership.

He argued that indiscriminately using revenue for token buybacks carries risks: it may signal that the protocol is overlooking competitive pressures and that the income could be better used to reinforce long-term competitive advantages elsewhere.

04 Data Support

From a fundamentals perspective, Optimism’s Superchain has secured a strong market position. Statistics show Superchain accounts for 61.4% of Layer 2 fee market share and processes roughly 13% of all cryptocurrency transactions.

This market share continues to grow. As of January 9, 2026, OP was priced at approximately $0.3149. Over the past 30 days, the price declined by 4.70%, but rose 5.46% in the last 7 days.

As of January 9, 2026, OP’s circulating market cap stood at about $612.5 million, with a 24-hour trading volume of roughly $62.15 million.

05 Long-Term Value

At its core, this proposal aims to build a "growth flywheel": More OP chains joining Superchain drive increased on-chain activity and revenue. A portion of that revenue is used to buy back OP, boosting token value, which in turn better incentivizes and attracts developers and users.

From the perspective of token evolution, OP is shifting from a pure governance token to a value carrier closely tied to Superchain growth.

As Superchain develops, the token may take on additional roles, including securing shared infrastructure, coordinating sequencer rotation, and collectively governing core protocol functions.

Currently, on the Gate platform, users can easily trade OP tokens, track price movements in real time, and participate in the future development of the Optimism ecosystem. Investors should closely watch the governance vote on January 22, as it will be a key indicator for OP’s short-term trajectory.

Outlook

The Superchain ecosystem has standardized Layer 2 infrastructure through the OP Stack, attracting major chains such as Base and forming a robust alliance.

This "superchain" model has enabled Optimism to build a unique competitive moat in the fiercely contested Layer 2 landscape.
