OpenAI Robotics Department Head Resigns Over Ethical Concerns Regarding Military Applications

Gate News: On March 8, Caitlin Kalinowski, who has been leading OpenAI’s robotics division since November 2024, resigned due to concerns over the company’s military negotiations. She stated, “This was not an easy decision. AI plays a significant role in national security, but monitoring Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomous weapons without human authorization are lines that should have been discussed more cautiously. This is about principles, not individuals.”

Her departure comes amid escalating controversy: disagreements among AI companies over the boundaries of supporting the U.S. military with this technology have intensified. Recently, negotiations between the U.S. Department of Defense and Anthropic broke down after the latter demanded strict restrictions on domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons. Shortly afterward, OpenAI reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to deploy its models on a classified government network.
