Gate News reports that on March 10, CNBC reported that OpenAI has abandoned plans to expand the Stargate data center in Abilene, Texas, in the United States, in favor of deploying a new generation of Nvidia GPU clusters. The report states that the existing Abilene project plans to use Nvidia Blackwell chips and is expected to be powered on in a year, but OpenAI hopes to use more powerful next-generation chips at other locations by then. Currently, Oracle mainly relies on debt to fund AI infrastructure expansion, with over $100 billion in debt on its books and negative free cash flow. Partner Blue Owl has also refused to provide funding for new facilities. Analysts say that the rapid pace of GPU updates compared to data center construction cycles may cause infrastructure to lag behind the latest hardware when it goes into operation.
