Gate News Report, March 20 — NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang shared an counterintuitive example of AI impacting careers during an interview on the All-In podcast. He said that one of the top scientists in AI a decade ago predicted that computer vision would eliminate radiologists and called it “the only profession not recommended to enter.” However, ten years later, computer vision has been integrated into 100% of radiology imaging platforms, yet the number of radiologists has actually increased, and demand continues to grow.
Huang explained the logic behind this: the “task” of radiologists is to read images, but the “purpose” is to assist diagnosis. As AI speeds up image reading, hospitals can see more patients and process more scans. “Hospitals also want to make money; more scans mean more revenue, so they need more radiologists.” He believes this pattern will repeat across various industries: AI changes the task layer of work, not the purpose behind it. Productivity improvements lead to wealth that ultimately creates more jobs rather than eliminating them.
