ETH drops 0.63% in 15 minutes: whale sell-offs and large net inflows to exchanges trigger selling pressure

ETH0,58%

2026-04-09 22:45 to 2026-04-09 23:00 (UTC), ETH saw a clear price swing. During this period, the 15-minute K-line return recorded -0.63%, with the quote ranging from 2197.61 to 2215.0 USDT, and the amplitude reaching 0.79%. Although this fluctuation did not reach extreme levels, as a mainstream, highly liquid asset, changes in returns over a short time have drawn market attention, with trading activity increasing and volatility intensifying significantly.

The main driver behind this move is that top on-chain holders (whale addresses) continuously reduced positions slightly, along with a sharp surge in ETH net inflows to major exchanges. According to on-chain analysis, during the period from 22:45 to 23:00 on April 9, whale net holdings decreased by about 2,000 ETH, while approximately 25,000 ETH was transferred to exchanges, setting a peak for the day’s single-hour net inflow. This pattern of fund flows suggests that many holders are preparing to realize profits, triggering short-term, concentrated sell pressure that pushed spot market prices downward.

At the same time, the derivatives market also showed a resonance effect. ETH perpetual futures open interest (OI) rose in sync by 2.1%, and the funding rate turned negative in the short term, reflecting more stop-outs among longs and increased adding by shorts. While there were no large-scale liquidations, some long position stop-outs further intensified selling pressure. In addition, the number of active on-chain addresses and trading volume were not abnormal, ruling out retail panic or being driven by sudden external macro news. This indicates that the current volatility was mainly driven by large on-chain players’ capital actions and synchronized structural effects in the derivatives market.

At present, it is important to note that ETH is still operating in an environment with high concentration of holdings. If whales continue to reduce positions afterward or exchange net inflows do not show a clear pullback, there is a risk of further downside for the price. Users should closely monitor large transfer activity, the direction of funds at major exchanges, and changes in key derivatives market indicators. As short-term volatility increases, watch key support ranges and adjustments by large capital, and stay updated with more real-time market news headlines.
