Mastercard has announced that it will allow businesses on its network to accept stablecoin payments, as part of a partnership with payment processor Nuvei and stablecoin issuers.
Mastercard announced on April 28 that the initiative will now enable 150 million merchants on the Mastercard network to accept stablecoin payments, regardless of how customers pay.
The payments giant has also partnered with a cryptocurrency exchange to launch a crypto-backed debit card. Jorn Lambert, head of product at Mastercard, said this created a "360-degree way" where consumers spend with stablecoins and businesses buy stablecoins.
Lambert also stated that "the mainstream application scenarios of blockchain technology are clear," and that the company "hopes to make it easier for businesses to adopt stablecoin payments and for consumers to use them."
The stablecoin market continues to grow, with a total market value exceeding $230 billion, a 54% increase from last year. Tether
USDTUSD and USDC USDCUSD dominate the market, reaching 90%.
According to the report released last month by the on-chain analysis platforms Artemis and Dune, the number of active stablecoin wallets has increased by more than 50% in a year.
Investment banking giant Citigroup predicted in a report on April 23 that regulatory support and the adoption by financial institutions are paving the way for the stablecoin market to reach $3.7 trillion by 2030.
