To completely grasp a group, a simpler method than controlling their material living standards is to control their thoughts. The simplest way to control thoughts is to use beautiful vocabulary to describe the ugliness deep within the human soul. In this way, a small number of people can commit bad deeds with a clear conscience, such as calling betraying a friend distinguishing between friend and foe, calling kicking someone when they're down drawing a clear line, calling exposing relatives taking a stand, and calling reporting parents acting for righteousness. To this day, most people still do not understand the meaning of the above passage. In 1961, Hu Shih was invited to give a speech internationally. In this speech, Hu Shih said that we, as a part of Eastern civilization, have little spiritual component. A civilization can tolerate the binding of women's feet for a thousand years without a single protest. A civilization can regard male superiority and female inferiority as orderly and take it for granted. A civilization can view life as suffering and poverty as virtue. What is there to be proud of in such a civilization? At that time, many people were angry at Hu Shih's speech, among them a man named Xu Fugui, who was furious after seeing it. He said that today he saw Dr. Hu's speech in the newspaper, where he slandered Eastern culture with all kinds of vulgar words. His excessive inferiority complex led him to flatter Westerners by denigrating Chinese culture, which is simply too thick-skinned and dark-hearted. He asked, is there not a bit of good in Chinese culture among the myriad bad? If that’s the case, can Dr. Hu say what that bit of good is? In fact, the ones who criticize America the most are precisely the Americans themselves. American movies, novels, and all culture have always been used to speak ill of America, but it is precisely this attitude that has allowed America to lead far ahead of other countries in technology and many other aspects. However, when we look back at those who like to praise their situation, their lives are often accompanied by hunger, poverty, suffering, and other such words. They like to distinguish between friend and foe, like to draw clear lines, like to take a stand, like to act for righteousness, they like to give, like to contribute, like to sing the praises of suffering, yet they rarely reflect on what these so-called virtues really mean for human nature. Some say that if you live in a place you can only call heaven, then that place is likely hell.
