The Federation Council of Russia approves the abolition of the plutonium processing protocol between Russia and the United States.
On October 22, local time, the Federation Council of Russia abolished the "Plutonium Management and Disposition Agreement" signed with the U.S. government during a plenary meeting. All relevant protocols other than the main protocol have been declared null and void. The Russian side stated that due to US sanctions, the aid to Ukraine bill, NATO's eastward expansion, and the strengthening of US military deployment in Eastern Europe, this protocol has previously been in a suspended state in accordance with the presidential decree and relevant federal laws. Another reason for the suspension is that the United States is attempting to unilaterally change the procedures for handling plutonium without the consent of Russia. In addition, given that the US has not fulfilled any conditions and has taken new anti-Russian measures, it has fundamentally changed the strategic balance at the time the protocol was signed, and poses a further threat to strategic stability.
