The founder of Rockstar warns that AI is "poisoning" the gaming industry, but 90% of studios have already entered a position.

Abstract generation in progress

[Coin World] Dan Houser, the co-founder of Rockstar Games, recently issued a rather alarming warning – generative AI could lead the gaming industry into a ditch.

He made a vivid analogy while chatting with Virgin Radio UK: AI models are now grabbing data everywhere, and the amount of garbage content generated by AI online is increasing, which is like “mad cow disease”; the gaming industry may fall into a self-reinforcing cycle, producing worse and worse quality.

But the reality is a different story. According to research from Google Cloud, nearly 90% of game studios are already using AI—real-time NPC reactions, multilingual localization, and automated testing are everywhere visible. Their global game director, Jack Buser, put it more bluntly: studios that can't keep up with this wave of technology might as well wait to be eliminated.

On one side are the concerns of industry veterans, and on the other side is the industry's frenzied betting. How should this game be played?

Dan is right, but to be honest, who can really resist it? In this era of AI, not using it means you're really dead. It's really just "mad cow disease"; feeding garbage data to AI and then AI spits out garbage games, a perfect closed loop, haha. Ninety percent of studios have entered a position, so isn't his warning just hindsight wisdom? In front of capital, who cares about toxicity or not? Why does it feel like making games has become increasingly lazy, just let AI handle everything? Dan Houser is somewhat idealistic; it’s still an era where money talks. Does it sound like he’s anxious about the quality of his games? But the situation really isn’t as good as before. Why are big companies not afraid of being bitten back by AI? Isn’t it because they can seize time and market?

Haha, Dan Houser is getting anxious, but it’s already too late. Studios have long been using AI with great success. --- To put it bluntly, it’s all just moral posturing. They still push 996 and have AI do the work; cost is what really matters. --- The mad cow disease metaphor is brilliant, but how can the next generation of games be made? Let’s just leave it at that. --- Ninety percent of studios are using it; what’s the use of this guy calling for a stop? It’s a waste of effort. --- Instead of worrying about AI poisoning games, you might as well worry about your own games not selling well. --- Founders of big companies love to talk big, but their own studios are secretly using it anyway. --- I can’t hold it anymore. AI generates junk → using AI to filter out the junk, it’s that simple. --- So what? Everyone is using it. Are you using AI for NPCs in GTA6? --- This is typical of just wanting to make money as long as it’s possible; don’t awkwardly chat about "poisoning."

Haha, Dan Houser is anxious, but the problem is that the studio has already gotten wrapped up in it, who cares what he says? Ninety percent have entered a position, this is the market after all, no warning can stop it. The analogy of mad cow disease is brilliant, but making money is the top priority, right? No matter how nice it sounds, one has to follow the trend, otherwise, they'll be eliminated. The issue of AI junk data recycling is indeed a bit messed up, but who told the gaming industry to be so competitive? Studios can choose to die without AI, or they might slowly die with it; this is the current dilemma. Dan, you're right, but no one is listening to you, everyone is scrambling for AI benefits.

Mad cow disease haha, Dan this metaphor is indeed brilliant... but speaking of which, 90% of the studios have already entered a position and are still shouting that AI is poisoning the industry. Isn't this the classic double standard of vested interests?

In the end, it's not like everyone isn't using it; while shouting that the wolf is coming, they're secretly entering a position. I'm tired of this trap. AI is indeed a double-edged sword; there are quality issues to address, but it shouldn't be this pessimistic. Ninety percent of studios are using it; is Rockstar being hypocritical or do they really think they can be the exception? The term 'mad cow disease' sounds scary, but the real poison in the gaming industry is short-sightedness; AI is just a tool. It sounds nice, but isn't it just about protecting their competitive advantage? Stop pretending to be morally superior. AI creating a batch of "junk content" is indeed troublesome, but the problem is that nobody can stop this wave.

nah dan houser's mad about the wrong thing... the genie's already out tbh. 90% adoption isn't a warning, it's market psychology 101—read between the lines, this is accumulation phase energy. smart money's been positioning for months 🔍
