The most widespread and appreciated research paper in the AI community last week was a massive collaborative effort involving major research and industry entities, including leading teams from Alibaba (Qwen), Tencent, Huawei, ByteDance, universities like HKUST, and other advanced research labs, titled:

From Code Foundation Models to Agents and Applications

A comprehensive and intensive guide (more than 190 pages) to understanding "Programming AI" from foundational models to agents and practical applications

The idea presented by the paper is very important: how tools like Copilot and Cursor have actually changed the way code is written and clearly increased productivity, but it is still difficult to grasp the full picture behind them:

What is the model behind them? How were they trained? What’s the difference between a general language model that understands programming and a specialized code model? When do we need a “Programming Agent” instead of a simple general code generator model?

The paper provides a complete picture, connecting research with real-world application:
- How are training datasets for code models built?
- How do the training stages differ between Pre-training, SFT, and Reinforcement Learning?
- Why do some models excel at bug fixing while others excel at generating new code?
- How do we evaluate “code quality” beyond just functional correctness?

It also covers the current transition from code completion models to programming agents working through IDEs, (Terminals), and the web, discussing real challenges such as:
security, understanding long-term context, working with large codebases, and reliability in production environments

This is not just a paper about a “new model,” but a comprehensive roadmap illustrating where we stand in programming AI and why we are moving from code generation to systems capable of building software almost autonomously.

The paper is very lengthy and filled with details, and what’s summarized here is just an overview of its core ideas,
but it’s an excellent reference for anyone working on or interested in the future of code models, programming agents, and the transformation of software development in the AI era.
