Greg Hicks Steps Into Canadian Tire's Top Leadership Role Following Strategic Executive Transition

Canadian Tire Corp. Limited (CTC.TO) has elevated Greg Hicks to the role of President and Chief Executive Officer, with the appointment becoming effective immediately. The move marks a significant leadership transition within the retail giant’s executive structure.

Hicks brings extensive retail expertise to the position, with over two decades of experience in senior management roles. He has spent seven years with Canadian Tire, most recently leading Canadian Tire Retail (CTR)—the company’s flagship business division generating more than $9 billion in annual revenue. During his tenure as President of CTR, Hicks oversaw comprehensive business operations and spearheaded the development of a multi-billion-dollar portfolio of Owned Brands.

Before assuming leadership of the retail division, Hicks held the position of Group Senior Vice-President, Consumer Products & Retail Experience at Canadian Tire, demonstrating his deep understanding of the organization’s operations and strategic direction.

The Board’s Search Committee conducted an extensive global recruitment process before making this selection, evaluating numerous qualified candidates from both internal and external talent pools. According to Maureen Sabia, Chairman of Canadian Tire Corp., the evaluation criteria centered on the company’s strategic objectives and the critical competencies needed to drive future growth.

The transition includes provisions for continuity, as Stephen Wetmore—who previously held the CEO position and served on the Board since 2003—will remain engaged with the organization as an Honorary Director through the end of 2020. In this advisory capacity, Wetmore will work closely with Hicks to facilitate a seamless leadership handover. Wetmore is stepping down from his Board membership as part of the succession plan.
