Convex, a backend management platform for web developers, has launched a new open-source project called “AI Town.” This project allows developers to freely build and run customized AI simulation environments using JavaScript.
Enabling AI Environment Development for Developers
The biggest feature of AI Town is that any developer proficient in JavaScript can build an AI world without complex setup. Previously, AI development required specialized knowledge, but Convex’s approach makes it accessible to web developers as well.
The project being open-source is expected to lead to continuous improvements and feature expansions by the developer community.
Strategic Expansion Supported by Major Industry Investors
Convex’s rapid growth is backed by its strong investor lineup. In April 2022, the company successfully raised $26 million in Series A funding led by a16z (Andreessen Horowitz).
This funding round included prominent industry investors such as Nat Friedman, former CEO of GitHub; Rami Shriram, a director at Alphabet; and Michael Ovitz, founder of Creative Artists Agency.
Strengthening the Management Team for Continued Growth
As part of this investment, Martin Casado, a general partner at a16z, joined the company’s board of directors. The involvement of industry veterans is expected to further enhance Convex’s competitiveness in the developer tools market.
The open-source release of AI Town and organizational strengthening at Convex may accelerate the establishment of a next-generation AI development platform based on JavaScript.
