Vitalik proposes replacing Casper FFG with Minimit to upgrade Ethereum's finality mechanism

Gate News Report, March 7 — Vitalik Buterin posted on X today stating that in the Ethereum consensus mechanism discussion, there is a proposal to replace the current finality component Casper FFG with a new one called Minimmit. He pointed out that Casper FFG uses a two-round finality mechanism, where validators need two signatures to complete “proof” and “final confirmation,” whereas Minimmit only requires one signature to achieve finality. As a trade-off, Minimmit’s fault tolerance threshold will be reduced from 33% in Casper FFG to about 17%. Vitalik believes that although the fault tolerance is lower, Minimmit is more likely to allow the network to enter a “multi-chain competition rather than incorrect final confirmation” state under various attack or client vulnerability scenarios, which is easier for the community to coordinate and recover from. He stated that, compared to incorrectly confirmed blocks, not achieving finality in a short period is safer and more recoverable, so he considers Minimmit potentially better overall in security trade-offs.
