I have completely followed the call and gone all in on Huizhou. Here are some experiences about moving as a digital nomad to Huizhou for everyone⬇️
Previously in Shanghai, because I stayed there for a long time and wanted a change of environment, my first choice was definitely Shenzhen. I looked at Shenzhen’s houses for several days, but within my budget, I couldn’t find a suitable place for filming (maybe not enough money😭).
Until just before leaving, I was having hotpot with friends, and someone suggested, why not live in Huizhou? You don’t need to go to work, and occasionally socialize once or twice a week. I thought, that actually makes some sense.
Until these past two days, I’ve been busy and finally settled down. I can responsibly tell you that the cost-performance ratio for digital nomads in Huizhou is extremely high!
I spent less than 3k to get the best community here—a three-bedroom, two-living room (100 sqm), with three scenic setups, south-north transparent small flat, downstairs are food stalls, night markets, shopping malls. In Shanghai’s city villages, rent at the same price doesn’t even get sunlight. Before this, I saw a three-bedroom, one-living room for 1900......
The commute to Shenzhen is also incredibly fast. Living in Huiyang District, there are many high-speed trains to Shenzhen North, with the latest arriving at 11 pm+, and the train shows about 25 minutes, but actual measurement is around 20 minutes. The taxi from the community to the high-speed rail station takes less than 10 minutes—definitely faster than living in some parts of Shenzhen.
Even if you live in Huicheng District, Huizhou’s north and south stations are only 30 minutes away from Shenzhen.
Of course, I considered for a long time before deciding to live in Huicheng District (Huizhou’s main urban area), Xiaojing Bay (Huizhou sea view house), or Huiyang District (Daya Bay, near Shenzhen area). (See the picture below for reference)
1. The house in Xiaojing Bay has great decor, beautiful scenery, and the agent is Sun Ge, a high school classmate. He says he’s a “study scum,” while Sun Ge is a top student. Living by the sea sounds wonderful—facing the ocean, spring blossoms—but in reality, it’s humid, lacks complete amenities, and the cost of living is high. Long-term living there would probably be uncomfortable, so I ultimately gave up this option.
2. Huicheng District is the farthest from Shenzhen. I don’t know why, but most of the houses I saw there had squat toilets, which I simply couldn’t get used to. Also, Huicheng’s high-speed train schedule to Shenzhen isn’t frequent. The Huizhou South station near the house I liked has the fewest and earliest trains, so I gave up on that too.
3. Finally, I looked at Huiyang. Thanks to Brother Men @Solomon_Nahhh for introducing the agent. The agents here are very responsible. My requirements were quite strict: I needed a place suitable for filming and scenery, with new furniture, and close to the high-speed rail station (other basic conditions aside). Two agents took me from 3 pm one day to the next afternoon. After viewing over a dozen places, I finally found one I was satisfied with. It was really hard work, so I treated everyone to a chicken hotpot. The double portion for two men and one woman was 100, and we couldn’t finish it—so delicious.
In the following year, I continued to focus on creating good crypto content, socializing more in Shenzhen, and engaging with more information. Many friends I met have moved to Shenzhen, but I recommend that if you’re alone, consider Huiyang! It’s really awesome! No matter if it’s a bear or bull market, saving and spending wisely is always right.
Friends in Huizhou and Shenzhen are also welcome to come and meet up, and maybe even form a Shenzhen-Huizhou support group haha.
