Argentina Blocks Polymarket, Called Unauthorized Online Gambling
The Argentine government has officially ordered the blocking of Polymarket, a crypto-based prediction market platform, throughout the country. The decision was made after authorities determined that the platform was operating as an unlicensed online gambling service.
The blocking order was issued by a court in Buenos Aires, which instructed the telecommunications regulator ENACOM to restrict access to the platform through internet service providers. Additionally, tech companies such as Google and Apple were asked to remove the application from their app stores for users in Argentina.
The case originated from a complaint filed by Buenos Aires City Lottery (LOTBA), which determined that Polymarket's activities violated gambling regulations in the country.
With this action, Argentina becomes the second country in the Latin American region to completely restrict access to Polymarket, following a previous ban by Colombia.
The policy reflects growing regulatory attention toward crypto-based platforms that function similarly to betting markets. Many authorities are beginning to tighten oversight of such services to ensure compliance with gambling regulations and consumer protection.
