Recently, I often need to register for overseas websites or test verification code interfaces using temporary phone numbers. Buying new SIM cards is obviously not practical, so I discovered virtual SMS reception platforms, which save a lot of trouble. Basically, they use other people's virtual numbers to receive texts, protecting privacy and making testing more convenient.

However, I've also encountered many pitfalls. Some platforms simply don't receive messages, some have delays of half a day, and certain number segments are blocked by risk control and become unusable. After trying around, I found a few decent virtual number platforms and want to share them with everyone.

SMS-Activate is the one I use the most. Verification codes usually arrive within 10 seconds, and it covers a wide range of countries, making it especially suitable for cross-border application testing. After registering and topping up, select the country and application type, get a number, and enter it— the whole process is smooth. 5SIM is also good, with a user-friendly interface and clear API documentation. Major platforms like Google and Twitter can receive verification codes normally.

For domestic applications, SuperCloud SMS and XiaoNiao Receive are more comfortable to use. SuperCloud SMS generally delivers US numbers within 10-30 seconds; Chinese numbers are even faster, with receipts in 5-20 seconds. XiaoNiao Receive is well optimized for common domestic e-commerce and social apps, with verification codes arriving within 5-15 seconds, especially fast during working hours. Getsmscode is inexpensive and suitable for light users, but some less popular platforms may experience delays.

There are a few points to note when using virtual SMS platforms. Shared numbers are easily used by others, and sometimes you'll see "Already Registered" messages—just switch to another number. Verification delays are common, especially for less popular countries or apps, so it's best to prepare several backup numbers. Also, don’t rely on these as long-term main numbers; privacy and security are not guaranteed.

My experience is that if you're just testing interfaces, any platform supporting API is sufficient. But if you want stable registration on a specific overseas site, it's better to top up multiple numbers so you can switch quickly if one becomes invalid. Some virtual SMS platforms support "one-click number switching," which is very practical and helps avoid waste. Overall, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the most stably, with low latency and broad coverage, worth trying.
