I just noticed that many new traders on Gate still don't quite understand what PNL is and how it really works. So here is my perspective on this term, which is fundamental in the finances of any cryptocurrency trading operation.
PNL, or Profit and Loss, is basically your financial thermometer for each trade. It sounds complicated but it's the simplest thing: it's the difference between what you paid for an asset and what you received when selling it. That's it. If that difference favors you, you have a profit. If not, you have a loss.
Let's take a real example that anyone can understand. Imagine you bought 0.1 BTC at $40,000, investing $4,000. An hour later, you sold it at $42,000, so you received $4,200. Your gross profit is $200. But here’s the important part: the exchange charges a fee, so your final PNL is about $198. That’s the actual difference that matters.
What’s interesting is that there are two types of PNL you should know. There’s unrealized PNL, which is the profit or loss you have while your position is still open, still in play. And then there’s realized PNL, which is what you’ve already closed and is a concrete number. One is potential, the other is real.
Now, the meaning of PNL in trading finance goes beyond just knowing if you made a profit or a loss. It’s directly related to ROI, your position size, the margin you use, and especially leverage. If you trade with leverage, your PNL can change dramatically in seconds due to price volatility. That’s why some traders see their gains turn into losses in minutes.
The formula is simple: Sale price minus purchase price, multiplied by the amount of the asset, minus commissions. That gives you your PNL. It can be positive, negative, or volatile depending on how the market moves.
To summarize, PNL is the most important indicator you should constantly monitor if you want to understand how your operation is performing. It’s not just a number; it’s the metric that tells you whether your strategy is working or needs adjustments. On Gate, you can see it in real-time for each position you open.
