Not long ago, I was thinking about how absurd “when lambo” still is in the crypto community. It seems this meme never dies, and honestly, there’s a pretty interesting story behind why hodlers obsess so much over Lamborghinis.
It all began in 2018 during the Consensus conference in Nueva York. Someone had the brilliant idea to park three Lamborghini(s) in front of the event to show off a little. From that moment on, “when lambo” became the mandatory question in every crypto group. The basic idea is simple: when your investments grow enough, you’ll be able to buy that luxury car. For most, we’re talking about between $200k y $500k. That’s no small thing.
What’s interesting is that this isn’t just theory. There are real cases. For example, Peter Saddington bought a Lamborghini in 2015 with just 45 bitcoins he had acquired for less than $115. Even earlier, in 2014, someone on 4chan managed to buy a Gallardo with 216 BTC. So “when lambo” went from being a meme to a tangible reality for some lucky people.
Now, it’s important to distinguish between “when lambo” and “when moon.” A lot of people confuse these terms. “When moon” is about the price of a specific coin rocketing into the sky. “When lambo,” on the other hand, isn’t about a single coin—it’s about your entire portfolio growing enough for you to afford that status symbol. It’s more personal, more ambitious.
The meme has a satirical edge that we can’t ignore. Basically, it mocks newcomers who enter the market just for quick profits, without understanding the technology or blockchain’s real potential. It’s the community’s way of joking about investors who only want to get rich overnight.
And here comes the curious part: some Lamborghini dealerships actually accept Bitcoin. There’s one in California and another in Suiza that does. Tesla also started accepting BTC as payment. A Model S was sold for approximately 91 BTC in December 2017, when Bitcoin was above $20k. So yes, technically, you can buy a Lamborghini with crypto if you have enough.
But if you ask me whether “when lambo” is still relevant, I’d say yes, but in a different way. The meme persists, especially among the younger members of the community, but the context has changed. It’s no longer as much about quick gains and extravagant spending. Now there’s more focus on long-term growth, real blockchain technology, DeFi, and what decentralization can truly offer.
Market volatility and the maturation of the crypto space have made many people rethink their goals. Even though the Lamborghini remains a symbol of success, the obsession with it isn’t what it used to be. But hey, as long as new investors keep coming into the market with dreams of financial freedom, “when lambo” will keep being part of crypto culture. It’s a reminder that yes, it’s possible to change your life with crypto—but also that not everything is as simple as it seems.
