OpenAI has just completed a $122 billion funding round at an $852 billion valuation. External media cited a suspected OpenAI cap table that has been circulating online, showing that OpenAI’s top five shareholders are Microsoft (US: MSFT) with 26.79%, the OpenAI Foundation with 25.8%, SoftBank Group with 11.66%, Amazon (US: AMZN) holding 4.66%, and Nvidia (US: NVDA) holding 3.47%.

Current and former OpenAI employees together hold about 20%, but what’s surprising is that the CEO Sam Altman has no equity holdings at all.

SoftBank Group’s investment in OpenAI yields about 1.5x

Citing Forbes data referenced on the X platform by Wall St Engine, Microsoft is OpenAI’s largest single shareholder, with total investment commitments of about $13 billion, deployed in multiple tranches, including $1 billion in 2019, $10 billion in January 2023, and an additional $2 billion in 2024. Based on OpenAI’s latest valuation of $852 billion, the value of its stake is about $228.3 billion, for a book return of more than 17x.

As for SoftBank Group’s investment cost—funded under the umbrella of Sun Zhengyi’s company—of $64.6 billion, it has risen to about $99.3 billion, for an investment return of about 1.5x. Nvidia holds about 3.47% of OpenAI shares, worth $29.6 billion, slightly lower than its investment cost of $30.1 billion.

According to a list that has circulated online, Hollywood star Ashton Kutcher, who has appeared in films such as “The Butterfly Effect” and “Jobs,” was also one of OpenAI’s shareholders. Kutcher invested in OpenAI through his fund, Sound Ventures, holding about 0.15% equity, with an investment cost of about $30 million. Marked to the latest valuation, it is worth about $1.3 billion, a return rate of roughly 43x.

However, Ashton is not Sound Ventures’ only investor; the fund has other shareholders as well.
