JUST IN: The Japanese government has taken a key step toward transforming how it regulates cryptocurrencies.


A reform bill approved by the cabinet proposes treating them as financial products, with new requirements for issuers, prohibitions against insider trading, and much harsher penalties for those who operate without registration.
The Japanese cabinet approved an amendment to classify cryptocurrencies as financial products under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act.
