The strictest smoking ban in Hong Kong will take effect on April 30th.
When I saw this news yesterday, it scared me. But today, after taking a careful look at the announcement from Hong Kong’s Department of Health Tobacco Control and Alcohol Office, it seems the issue isn’t too serious. This regulation mainly targets e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and herbal cigarettes (these aren’t tobacco, but other plants).
Put simply, what’s being banned isn’t the real, proper cigarettes—so you can happily bring my hand-rolled cigarettes to meet everyone.
Full text of the announcement:
What can be carried?
1. Finished cigarettes, 19 sticks
2. Cigars, 1 piece, 25g
3. Hand-rolled cigarette tobacco and pipe tobacco for pipes/tobacco, 25g
If you exceed this limit, you must declare and pay taxes. The tax rate isn’t low, but if you fail to declare and get caught, you’ll be fined—that’s even more terrifying, so don’t take the risk.
