Just went through updating my SASSA details and honestly, the process is different depending on which grant you're on. If you're getting the SRD, you can actually do everything online which is way easier. But for the permanent grants, yeah, you gotta go to the office in person—no shortcuts there.

So here's what I learned: if you need to change banking details for SRD, you go to the official portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a link via SMS. Pretty straightforward once you know where to look. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for the bank to verify everything, but at least you can do it from home.

For the permanent grants though, it's different. You have to physically visit your nearest SASSA office with your original ID, a recent bank statement or letter from your bank, and fill out their Payment Method Change Form. The whole thing can take up to 21 working days to process. Pro tip: if you're trying to change banking details before the next payment cycle, submit it before the 15th of the month or you'll have to wait another cycle.

Also make sure your new bank account is only in your name—they won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that. And if you're changing your phone number (which you might need to do if you lost your phone), that's another process. For SRD you can update it online too, but for permanent grants you'll need to call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office.

The biggest thing? Don't fall for those fake websites claiming they can change your details. Always use the official SASSA portal. Seen too many people get caught out with that. Just go through the proper channels and you'll be fine.
