Debate on the Actual Impact
Not all parties believe this seizure can truly pressure Tehran. Daniel Tannebaum, senior researcher at the Atlantic Council and partner at Oliver Wyman, calls this freeze "meaningful," but he warns that Iran has been adapting to economic pressure for decades.
"The way to pressure Iran now, since Iran has already been hit hard by sanctions, is to target third parties that assist them," Tannebaum told CNN, highlighting jurisdictions like China as the next key detention point.
Cyberattacks targeting Iran's crypto infrastructure are also increasing simultaneously.
Last year, pro-Israel hackers drained about US$90 million from Iran's largest exchange during a military attack.
The disclosure on Friday comes at a crucial moment for stablecoin policy. Tether states that they are currently coordinating with more than 340 law enforcement agencies in 65 countries and have helped freeze over US$4.4 billion.
