Bitcoin halving is an event programmed into the Bitcoin protocol that occurs approximately every four years. During a halving, the number of new bitcoins created as a reward for mining a new block is cut in half. This results in a reduction of the rate at which new bitcoins enter circulation.
The purpose of halving is to control the supply of bitcoins and create scarcity, similar to how precious metals like gold are scarce. This scarcity is one of the factors contributing to Bitcoin_s value over time. The halvings also have historically led to an increase in the price of Bitcoin as demand remains steady or grows while the supply reduces. The most recent Bitcoin halving occurred in May 2020, and the next one is expected around the year 2024.
