What is Optimism?
Optimism is a layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum that aims to improve transaction speeds, increase scaling and reduce costs all while leveraging the security of the Ethereum network. It does so by using the Optimistic Virtual Machine (OVM) which facilitates the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) integration allowing developers to write scalable smart contracts on Ethereum.
OP is the native utility token of the Optimism network, which can be used to participate in the network's governance. The token facilitates the maintenance of a robust network ecosystem and supports the upgradeability of the platform through a decentralized governance framework.
Additionally, one of the major scalability improvements intended for the Optimism network is the concept of a Superchain: a network of chains that share bridging, decentralized governance, upgrades, a communication layer and more.
