A few things in cryptocurrency are as unclear and misunderstood as the concept of "altcoin season." Traditionally, this term referred to a short period — usually 2–3 months — following a rally in the price of Bitcoin (BTC), when altcoins outperform BTC in cumulative returns. This pattern was observed in the cycles of 2015–2018 and 2019–2022, but a verdict has yet to be made on whether the current bull market has had its altcoin season. The Blockchain Center defines the altcoin season as a period when 75% of the top 50 altcoins outperform Bitcoin over a 90-day moving average.
