Animoca Brands completes acquisition of SOMO, expands Web3 digital collectibles and blockchain gaming ecosystem

January 14 News, the world-leading Web3 company Animoca Brands announced that it has officially completed the acquisition of digital collectibles and gaming company SOMO, further expanding its layout in blockchain gaming, digital collectibles, and tokenized digital assets. Overall, this acquisition highlights Animoca Brands’ long-term strategy to continuously strengthen the Web3 content ecosystem and promote the implementation of digital ownership.

SOMO focuses on transforming digital collectibles into playable, tradable, and live-streamable interactive assets. Its products include SOMO Codex, SOMO Duel, and the flagship game SOMO Battleground, building a crypto-native gaming ecosystem centered around collection, battles, and issuance mechanisms. Through on-chain mechanisms, SOMO combines traditional capsule toy and trading card culture with blockchain technology, emphasizing true ownership and scarcity.

After the acquisition, Animoca Brands plans to leverage its mature Web3 ecosystem to deeply empower the SOMO brand, including ecosystem collaboration, user cross-flow, and community-level integration and development. From a long-term perspective, this resource integration will help SOMO reach global players and collectors more quickly, while also injecting new growth points into Animoca Brands’ content matrix.

Yat Siu, co-founder and Executive Chairman of Animoca Brands, stated that SOMO is building a “cultural operating system” around collectibles, which aligns closely with Animoca Brands’ existing blockchain games and digital asset layout. By integrating into Animoca Brands’ global network, SOMO will have the opportunity to connect with more games, communities, and partners, amplifying its product influence.

From an industry perspective, SOMO’s positioning is not limited to a single game project but aims to build a cyclical universe of collection and gaming, making each issuance, activation, and battle part of the digital collection economy. Overall, this acquisition reflects how leading Web3 companies are accelerating the integration of high-quality content and user engagement through mergers and acquisitions.
