Trump's Crypto Gala Draws Praise, Protests, and Questions
The highly anticipated Trump Gala Dinner unfolded with opulence and controversy as former President Donald Trump hosted 220 top investors in his $TRUMP memecoin at his private golf club near Washington, D.C. The exclusive event, aimed at honoring major crypto backers, featured a lavish dinner, luxury gifts, and a VIP reception for the top 25 spenders, who together had poured over $111 million into the token.
Despite the glamour, the event sparked outrage among critics. Around 100 protesters gathered outside the venue, shouting “shame” at guests and holding signs denouncing the fusion of political power and crypto wealth. Inside, guests including Tron CEO Justin Sun, Magic Eden CEO Jack Lu, and BitMart CEO Sheldon Xia shared glimpses of the evening on social media, showing a three-course meal and gift bags.
Among the most notable moments was Justin Sun being awarded a Trump Golden Tourbillon watch, valued at $100,000, for being the top investor with $18.5 million in $TRUMP coin. Sun praised Trump for supporting the crypto industry and championing his blockchain platform, World Liberty Financial.
The evening’s menu included Trump-branded organic field green salad, filet mignon, pan-seared halibut, and chocolate lava cake. More than half of the attendees were international, and the guest list boasted figures like former NBA player Lamar Odom and prominent crypto whales.
Democratic lawmakers were swift to criticize the gathering. Senator Elizabeth Warren condemned the event as “an orgy of corruption,” demanding transparency and a full release of the guest list. The White House dismissed the criticism, stating Trump attended the event in a private capacity.
As debates rage over ethics and influence, the gala underscored both Trump’s growing involvement in crypto and the deep political divides it continues to spark.
