According to AMC's earnings report, the company's stock surged 24% Monday afternoon after reporting a 14% increase in second-quarter revenue and $104 million in adjusted net earnings, compared to a small loss a year prior. The results were driven in part by director Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," which earned $124 million domestically and drew more than 4.3 million moviegoers to AMC theaters worldwide over the weekend, marking the best opening for an R-rated film at the chain since 2024.
Special format theaters, including IMAX, accounted for more than 50% of ticket sales for the film despite representing only 8% of AMC's screens, AMC CEO Adam Aron said on an earnings call. The company plans to add at least 100 large-format screens, which command $6–$7 premiums per ticket.
