According to Rest of World, U.S. developers and startups are rapidly adopting Chinese AI models such as DeepSeek, Minimax, and Kimi to reduce operating expenses. DeepSeek's token usage share on the Vercel platform jumped from below 1% to 17% in May, reflecting strong adoption driven by the models' cost-effectiveness for common tasks like code generation. Microsoft is also exploring using DeepSeek or other open-source models as a lower-cost alternative for Copilot.
