According to Beating, developers have discovered that OpenAI's ChatGPT Work agent—designed to handle files and execute tasks over several hours—runs a Linux cloud environment that can be remotely accessed. Pro users gain access to a cloud setup with 9 CPU cores, approximately 21GB of memory, and 63GB of disk space, allowing direct file editing and software installation via terminal, VS Code, and Cursor.
However, the environment is not a permanently allocated server. OpenAI has not disclosed session duration, file retention policies, or service guarantees, meaning processes may terminate and files could be lost when sessions end or environments are replaced.
