DoorDash, Airbnb Switch to Chinese AI Models to Cut Costs as Open-Weight Models Gain Traction

According to Sun Media, major US enterprises including DoorDash and Airbnb have begun adopting Chinese-developed AI models to replace American counterparts like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude, driven by cost efficiency and open-weight architecture. DoorDash co-founder Andy Fang noted on X that deploying Moonshot AI's models for lower-tier tasks significantly reduced expenses. One organization previously spent $500 million monthly on Claude usage, while DeepSeek and Zhipu models now deliver comparable or superior capabilities at substantially lower costs. According to Georgetown University's Center for Security and Emerging Technology, Chinese models have become sufficiently practical for most enterprise workloads, making the premium pricing of US suppliers increasingly difficult to justify.
