According to Trent Van Epps, a former Ethereum Foundation member, the foundation's Client Incentive Program (CIP), a 4-year funding initiative supporting client teams via staking, expired in April 2026 with no replacement plan in sight. Core development teams, including clients, research, and coordination, may enter a slow-motion funding crisis within the next 3-9 months. Maintaining over 10 client, research, and coordination teams requires approximately $30 million in annual funding; any funding gap could trigger talent loss and reduce protocol maintenance capacity.
