According to Counterpoint Research, global smartphone shipments fell 11% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2026, marking the worst Q2 performance in 13 years. The decline is primarily driven by an artificial intelligence-induced memory chip shortage, with memory prices surging approximately 300% compared to a year earlier, according to IDC analyst Nabila Popal. IDC separately estimated Q2 shipments dropped 6.7% sequentially. While Apple and Samsung saw shipment growth, Chinese manufacturers including Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo faced headwinds as premium brands also experienced pressure.
