GM Installs 50 Robots at Detroit EV Factory as 1,300 Workers Remain Laid Off

According to Crain's Detroit Business, General Motors has installed approximately 50 robot arms made by Japanese robotics company FANUC at its Factory Zero facility in Detroit, even as 1,300 workers remain indefinitely laid off following what was announced as temporary layoffs in March. The robots are designed to assist with attaching components to vehicles during assembly. UAW Local 22 president James Cotton expressed anger at the automation push, stating the company could recall laid-off workers instead. Andrew Bergman, a Local 22 member laid off by GM, criticized corporate prioritization of profits over workers, saying automation in corporate hands is used to pad profits rather than improve safety or reduce working hours without pay cuts.
